2003 John Southam AwardsFebruary 13, 2003, Miami, FL - Winners of the annual Southam Awards for excellence in sailing communications were announced today by Sail America Marketing Committee Chair Sally Helme during the Miami International Boat Show Press Breakfast....The Southam Awards are named in honor of John Southam, former publisher of Cruising World and Sailing World magazines, who played a significant role in the growth of Sail America, the U.S. industry trade association. This year, the competition garnered 104 entries, the second highest in awards history, ranging from small community newspapers to major broadcast coverage, for a total of 84,416,938 total media impressions. In addition to the grand prize, judges selected five additional category winners, for a total of $10,000 in cash prizes.... [Prizes are awarded for newspaper stories, magazine articles, television broadcasts, and "expanded" media, which can include books, CDs, and other media.] The Expanded Category winner is Sally Ford, whose children's book, "Bungee's Voyage," tells the tale of a brave little dog who sails her boat, Gypsy Rover, from Maine to Tahiti. Along the way, she learns about the joys of sailing and the storms of life. Ford's book is part of an overall educational venture that brings the author directly into the classroom or via a Distance Learning program.... "We are extremely pleased by the outstanding quality and the quantity of submissions to the contest this year," said Helme. "Sailing is enjoying a positive momentum in the press and as an association, we look forward to continuing our support through the Southam Awards competition.
